Study Hall.

It’s about having a place where we are given a calm and relaxing environment during the day.  It’s a time put toward schoolwork with teachers and volunteer tutors.

Why don’t we have one?

Everything in the schedule must have a Morse code, Assistant Principal of Curriculum Ms. Kepler explained.

“That’s what’s difficult about having a study hall. The only study hall that exists is drivers’ education or being an aide and do study hall in that class,” she said.

Who would supervise this room?  It’s is a major consideration. There would have to be a teacher, and students could volunteer to tutor their peers.

The school wouldn’t have an issue with finding a location for students to study. The ideal location would be the media center or cafe.

But… there are pros and cons to this idea:

Pros:

  • Certified instructor involved
  • Better grades and better performance
  • “Learning from students, peer-to-peer, is best because they usually speak the same language so they learn better,” Ms. Kepler said.

Cons

  • Not enough students could spare the period for a no credit class
  • Some kids may think it’s a time to goof off

The pros outweigh the cons.
