I’m Drowning

I'm Drowning

Krystal Hernandez

Now. She embraces the warm, salted waves
The sea extinguishes her shame, her rage

She has darkness where others can’t see
And she longs to be the light that’s far within her reach

And she, buoyant in a cotton, lace dress
Stained, shredded, pink nonetheless

She steps and steps, until the rip currents lap her chin
The sun fires her determined will and pale, burned skin

Her memory, her insanity, drowns
As water loves her, yet sucks her down

This, only this, she trusts
So wet, so final, so deep and unjust

And she sinks, below her vanity, her morality and humanity
And eventually, she floats to bloated mortality
