South’s beloved Ms. Rubenstein, an English teacher, attended the March for Our Lives in Washington with her sister on March 24.

It was a poignant day for them because Ms. Rubenstein’s sister, Lauren Rubenstein, is a teacher at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School.  She was present on February 14th, the day a crazed former student fired on his classmates.  The attack left 17 students and staff dead.

Ms. Rubenstein’s sister was thankfully a survivor. Lauren Rubenstein was the Peer Counseling Coordinator then, and now she is the Athletic Director.

“It was very touching to hear the kids speak about the shooting,” Ms. Rubenstein said.

A concert was held which had music performances and welcomed guest speakers to the event. Ms. Rubenstein met Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, Gabby Giffords, George Clooney, and Amal Clooney.

Gunshot victims from all over the US were in attendance and some even spoke, not entirely on the school shooting but on shooting in general and being able to control situations like these. The weekend guest speakers included student activists David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez.

“They were very respectful and sweet teenagers,” Ms. Rubenstein said, and she met them after the press conference at the U.S. Capitol. Ms. Rubenstein’s sister also met with the staff of Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Ms. Rubenstein said it was a great and organized event and hopefully the message the marchers want to spread gets across.
