Kristen Salinas is a Senior Soccer and Track athlete here at South Fort Myers High School. She was offered a Track and Soccer scholarship to Brevard College.

She is looking forward to her future.

“The school is very beautiful and the landscape is great,” Kristen said.

A newly Division 3 school located in Brevard, North Carolina costs $40,000 a year, and the school is paying half her tuition. She was notified about the scholarship two months ago.

Kristen started playing soccer in kindergarten. She says it has taught her to be comfortable with other people. Coming into high school, Kristen was very shy and not much of an open person. Trying out for a team helped her get over that.

She stopped playing soccer for a while and had an on-and-off relationship with the sport. Eventually she stuck with it. She also runs long distance and short distance in track. Her track career didn’t begin until her junior year.

Kristen said sports is one of her greatest teachers.

“Even though you lose a lot, you have to stay positive and go along with the flow,” she said.

She’s taken one visit to the college, and she was blown away by how beautiful the campus was. Needless to say, the mountainous landscape is different from Florida.

“When I play soccer there, you can see the trees in the background of the field. A stream runs through the middle of the campus and it snows,” she said.

Brevard isn’t the only school that offered her a ride. William Penn University and College of St. Joseph did, too.

Kristen chose Brevard because she wants to study the human body.  She has always been curious about how it works, and her goal is to become a physical therapist.

Big things are ahead for Kristen!
