As a new baseball season rolls in, the South Fort Myers Wolfpack varsity baseball team, hopes to take this season all the way to states.

When talking to some of the players, they had a lot of good things to say, including the fact that they would all like to play in college if given the opportunity.

“States or bust,” said Hugo Veliz, junior, number seven, P.O/D.H.

According to Veliz, even though this season is bringing almost a whole new team, it’s been a hard time filling in the spots of the lost seven seniors.

But the team is making an effort to make it work.

“We’re a lot more contact hitting team and our defense has improved a lot this year,” Hugo said.

John Morel, senior, number twenty-one, first base, said he hopes to achieve more wins this year and make a difference for South’s baseball team and go to districts and states.

“We’re off to a slow start. We just got to find it. Everyone’s got to be on the same page,” John said.

As a senior he hopes the younger players learn how to play to their fullest potential and bring an even better season next year, when he’s gone.

Justin Hughes, senior, number 3, second base, explained everyone is a hard worker and is trying to get better every day.

“Everyone just has to come together as a team, family, and we will achieve success,” Justin said.

Coach Shelton has big dreams for the team. His main goal for his players is to play hard and try to achieve their highest goals and to never give up. His strategy for practices are to run as many drills as possible and to have his players keep a positive mind set.

“Baseball is a game of bad things and if you don’t have a method or tool to deal with bad, you’re going to struggle,” Coach said.
