So what is it about wrestling?

There is a US history teacher and head wrestling coach at South Fort Myers High named Jake Noland.  He has been wrestling for 15 years.

On December 2nd, there was a wrestling competition at Golden Gate High School, and the Wolfpack was represented. We didn’t earn any individual awards, but South’s wrestlers did place third in their pool.

One of the team’s stars is Demarion Johnson.  After learning some lessons and taking more tips, he earned a fifth place spot at the Hollywood Tournament on Dec. 8.

Regardless of wins or losses, Coach Nolan stresses wrestling is a great way to stay in shape.

It all comes down to how hard you are willing to work, he said.

“Wrestling is unlike any sport.  You have nobody to blame when you win or lose,” Coach Noland said.

Coach Nolan is reluctant to name “the man” when it comes to our school’s wrestling team, but he will say there are a couple of young kids who have the ability to be great.

Wrestling teaches student athletes mental toughness and athlete Demarion Johnson agrees.

“One thing about wrestling is being in shape and being good with your hands.  It’s not easy at first.  You have to keep working on it.  No one is good at first,” he said.

Does this sport boost the male ego?  No, said Coach Noland.  He said wrestling promotes confidence.

“There’s no better feeling to have your hand raised at the end of the match,” he said.

“It’s just about you,” he said.
